Jim has been studying the orchids of the Philippines for over forty years, and has three books on the subject published in 2001, 2011, and 2015. He is now retired and spends time with his orchids and out in the bush looking at and photographing his local native orchid species in Australia.

He has 11 orchid species, of Philippine origins, named in his honour.
