Growing Cattleya Orchids Indoors – A Complete Guide
Cattleya Valentine 'Coerulea'

How Many Species Are There? Today, the Cattleya genus includes around 50–60 recognised species.
Historically, over 100 orchids were grouped under Cattleya, but DNA studies have reclassified some into related genera such as Guarianthe, Rhyncholaelia, and Sophronitis. Alongside these species, thousands of hybrids have been bred.
Growth Habit and Cycle Cattleyas are sympodial orchids that grow along a rhizome, forming pseudobulbs that store water and nutrients. Their yearly rhythm follows four stages:
1. New growth (spring–early summer) – Shoots form and develop into pseudobulbs.
2. Maturation (summer) – Pseudobulbs reach full size, often producing a bud sheath.
3. Flowering (autumn or later) – Blooms emerge, lasting 2–6 weeks.
4. Rest (winter) – Growth slows; the plant conserves energy.
