Acineta erythroxantha and Maxillaria schunkeana

I'm a new member and am looking for advice on growing two species of orchid, (A. erythroxantha and M. schunkeana). i am growing in a room with a west/northwest facing window. The plants are currently around 2 metres from the window.

Here is a picture of the Acineta:

Hi Domonkos

Thanks for your query.

The acineta grows at fairly high elevations so will benefit from intermediate temperatures (summer max 24C, min 15C; winter max 20C, min 12C). It can be watered freely when in growth – the potting mix should drain well and not dry out completely between watering. During winter, keep it a little drier, watering only enough to stop the pseudobulbs from wrinkling. It will need brighter light during winter (2m from the window is unlikely to provide enough light at this time of year). 50–60% humidity will suffice (low humidity will result in leaf-drop), increasing if temperatures are higher than desirable. Note that the flower spikes are pendent and will hang below the bottom of the pot.

The maxillaria should be happy under similar conditions, though will benefit from slightly brighter light year round. It doesn't have a marked rest period in winter (if ideal conditions aren't maintained, growth will slow down). Good air movement is important to prevent spotting of the leaves. It typically flowers in the late autumn-early winter (mine is in bloom at the moment).

I hope this helps.
