Taking Cattleyas into Winter
Hi there, I'm a new member who would like some advice please. As Autumn has started I am thinking about whether grow lights and heating will be needed across my mixed collection. I know there are some orchids requiring proper Winter rests or periods of cold to stimulate flowering but I can't seem to find any info about the Cattleya alliance regarding types which require short days or cold spells to start bud formation. I have about 40 Cattleya, are there any articles or good info sources on the topic or does it mean I have to an individual search on each plant? Most are still growing their new pseudobulbs at the moment but the nights are drawing in quickly, so do I start using my lights?
Would appreciate any input, thank you 😊
As well as all the helpful advice posted here you could get a copy of Home Orchid Growing by Rebecca Tyson-Northern, which if I remeber correctly has a whole load of information about manipulating flowering times in Cattleya using lights...
