Cool orchid grower

Hi fellow OSGB Members,

I've just discovered this forum (thanks Marcin for the heads up!). I'm based in London but unfortunately only manage to make the Napier Hall meeting once in a while.

Although I have a small garden, I don't have a greenhouse. Most of my collection comprises cool growing orchids which I grow outdoors for all but the coldest nights of the year. I have a number of Mexican Laelia, some Aussie Dendrobium and an increasing number of Masdevallia species and hybrids. I also grow indoors- these are Dendrobium species from the section Dendrobium such as nobile, ochreatum, wardianum.

I have been very lucky to have travelled to observe orchids growing in their natural habitat, and have written a couple of articles for the OSGB Journal about my adventures.

I'm excited about this new forum and very much look forward to interacting with society members!

Hi Kevin, it’s good to hear from someone else who doesn’t have a complex growing setup (can you tell I’m slightly jealous of them 😆). I have a number of cool growing Orchids, many of which are on the windowsills of a NE facing bathroom - Masdevallia, Pleurothallis, Ceologyne. Most of them do pretty well but they are taking over! Ihadn’t even thought of putting them outside. How do the Masdevallia get on? What protection do you offer them?
